Not much of a reader of novel type of books myself, but LOTR was good.
As for other book, I like the "infotainment" type of books. I suppose Tao of Jeet Kune Do also fits in that category

Asimov. Especially the foundation series. The robot books are good too, but I don't really like his Elijah Baley character.
LoTR is always good.
Orson Scott Card's Ender series.

I'm a samurai-geek so I LOVED the series by Lian Hearn called "Tales of the Otori."

The Starwars X-Wing series is probably the best series I have ever read. It may not be the most useful, but I had the most fun reading it. Read all 9 books 3 times.

Art of War was very useful though Sun Tzu came across as a very ruthless general.

Jarhead was very good as it is one of the few non-fiction novels giving us a glance at modern warfare.

ANYTHING by Terry Pratchett is 100% win. In fact, X-Wing and Terry Pratchett are tied haha.

I love The Dark Tower series. I've read through it 3 times now.

Currently, I'm reading the Dresden Files books. Very good, IMO. I like the books better than I like the show, of course.

I love all of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books, as well. I could read them all over and over.

Watership Down--- dunno the Author but I read it first in 5th grade, this was the book that hooked me on reading for life!!

My hubs buys box lots of books for me at auctions and garage sales, so mostly I read older books, atm I am really into a series by V C Andrews, (gotta hunt down 2 books that are AWOL) and I also love Tom Clancy. Actually, I'll read pretty much anything with words!!

Having eclectic taste in literature and chafing at the strictures of the word 'favorite,' listing the top ten books that come immediately to mind is more doable for me.

That said...
  1. "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" by Tom Robbins
  2. "A Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole
  3. "The Alchemist" by Paolo Coehlo
  4. "Jitterbug Perfume" by Tom Robbins
  5. "Cold Mountain" by Charles Frazier
  6. "Quincunx" by Charles Palliser
  7. "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
  8. "Love In the Time of Cholera" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
  9. "Poisonwood Bible" by Barbara Kingsolver
  10. "Still Life With Woodpecker" by Tom Robbins
  11. "Imajica" by Clive Barker... ooops, it turns out stopping at 10 wasn't doable
Not necessarily in that order

There are just to many GREAT books to boil it down to one. But I really love:

Lord of the Rings + The Hobbit
The Chronicles of Narnia
The Wheel of Time
Harry Potter
Most Dr. Seuss books

all of those are pretty typical I assume, but my last two are kind of curve balls:

The Apprentice Adept Series by Piers Anthony (all 7, not just the first 3)
The Crimson Shadow by R.A. Salvatore

I really liked Eragon by Paolini, but didn't really care for its sequel Eldest (still haven't finished it either, got like 100 pages to go.)
